Pornbroidery

By fabricating x-rated embroidered images, Strahl recontextualizes the traditional embroidery craft through a more contemporary application by inviting the viewer to consider the conventional structure and stitching of embroidery contrasted with the taboo, pornographic subject matter. Incorporated into each piece is a floral patterned fabric referencing an antiquated technical foundation of past generations in this highly feminized craft. On the back of each piece is embroidered an intimate phrase that corresponds with the risqué act displayed on the front. While the lewd images are displayed boldly for all viewers, the message is hidden and private, available only to the wearer and with whomever they choose to share it.
